Onion - 1 (finely chopped)
Tomato - 1 (Cut into cubes)
Cloves of garlic - 3
Some cilantro (finely chopped)
Red chili powder - 3/4 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Pinch of asafoetida
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Oil - 2 tsp
Salt to taste

Spices to dry roast and grind


Coriander seeds - 2 tbsp
Dry grated coconut - 2 tbsp
Sesame seeds - 1 tbsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tbsp
Dried red chilies - 4
Cinnamon stick - 1 inch
Black peppercorns - 10-12
Cloves - 4
Green cardamom - 2
Bay leaf - 1

Dry roast all above spices on low heat and grind them coarsely. Keep this aside

Procedure


  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, pinch of asafoetda and cumin seeds. Let them crackle. Add chopped onion and saute till it turns translucent.
  • Add chopped garlic and ginger. Saute for few seconds. 
  • Add tomato cubes and saute for 4-5 minutes. Once the tomatoes turns soft, add red chili powder, turmeric powder, ground masala and salt to taste. Saute till oil start to separate from spices.

  • Add 2 cups of hot water. Once the curry comes to boil, add dal vada to it and reduce the heat. Let the curry simmer for about 5-6 minutes. Sprinkle some chopped cilantro and serve hot with chapati or plain rice.
