Serving for - 2
Ingredients
Chicken - 500 gm
1 big onion - finely chopped
1/2 cup fresh / frozen grated coconut
2 tbsp tamarind pulp (I added 1/2 tsp tamarind paste concentrate)
3-4 cloves of garlic - minced
5 tsp oil
pinch of asafoetida
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 and half cup hot water
salt to taste
Cilantro for garnishing
Ingredients to dry roast and grind
1 tsp cumin seeds
5 red chilies (depends on how spicy you want)
1 tsp sesame seeds
1/2 tsp poppy seeds
1/2 tsp funnel seeds
1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
1/2 tsp black peppercorns
3-4 cloves
1 inch cinnamon stick
2-3 green cardamom
1 star anise
Dry roast all above ingredients to make a fine masala powder.
Procedure
- Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan. Add minced garlic and saute for few seconds. Add coconut and saute for 2-3 minutes. Add in this to blender. Add some chopped cilantro and little water. Make a smooth paste and keep it aside.
- Heat 4 tsp oil in a pan. Add pinch of asafoetida and chopped onion. Saute till onion becomes slight brown in color. Add chicken pieces, turmeric powder, ground masala powder, garlic- coconut paste, tamarind pulp and salt to taste. Add hot water and mix well. Cover the pan and let it cook for 15-20 minutes. Add finely chopped cilantro and let the gravy simmer on low heat for 5 minutes. Serve hot with roti or rice.
