Ingredients:


1 cup of toor dal - clean,wash and soak dal for 15-20 mins
2 red chilies
1 tsp of chili powder
3-4 cloves of garlic - finely chopped
3 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
half tsp of turmeric powder
pinch of asafoetida/ hing
salt to taste


Procedure:
  • Drain out the water from dal and add dal to pressure cooker. Add 2 and half cup of water and turmeric powder. Cook it in pressure cooker until 2 whistles. We want dal to be very tender.
  • Open the lid when all pressure goes away. put your pressure cooker on gas. Add chili powder and salt to taste. Add water and check consistency. Dal has to be on thicker side.
  • Heat up oil in pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilies and let them crackle. Then add chopped garlic and hing. Saute it till garlic gets golden brown color. Pour the hot flavored oil into the dal and stir well.
Tips:
  • To give red color to dal, add half tsp of paprika along with red chili powder.

  1. Saute onions along with curry leaves prior adding tomatoes , for a better aromatic & colorful tinge .
